Letter book no. 1, 1825 Feb. 11-May 31.

Sent to New Orleans by Boston merchants Nathaniel and William Goddard, Davis, in a series of 16 letters, records his frustration in being unable to profitably secure a load of cotton for shipment to England. The rise of cotton prices in Europe and competition from English ships in port were the main causes, but Davis had to also contend with the desertion of most of his crew, as well as the visit of Lafayette to New Orleans, which halted business activity there.
